Vision: a return to thriving caribou herds in Jasper National Park

Imagine hundreds of caribou in Jasper National Park able to survive and thrive on their own. Parks Canada envisions recovering caribou herds in the park so that they become plentiful and resilient over time. To achieve this future, Parks Canada is proposing to build the Tonquin herd to 200 caribou through a conservation breeding program in Jasper. Based on the experience and results with the Tonquin herd, Parks Canada would consider reintroducing captive-bred caribou into other areas of the park where herds have disappeared.
